It’s almost Halloween, and you know what that means—trick-or-treating! Getting the kids all dressed up in their costumes and collecting candy around the neighborhood is great fun and a long-running tradition for so many families.
This is a highlight of the holiday, and it’s so fun for kids to come home and pour their buckets and bags out to see what treasures they scored. But afterwards comes a sticky situation! Nobody really needs that much candy hanging around the house for what could be months on end. It’s not too good for your waistline and can really do a number on your family’s teeth, too. Luckily, there’s a way to spare your children’s teeth, tummies, and orthodontic appliances from sugary sabotage!
Every year at Shamblott Family Dentistry, we host a Halloween Candy Buyback program. For every pound of candy children bring in, we will pay them $1. Each child can be paid for up to five pounds of candy ($5). We’ll donate all of the sweets to a nonprofit called Operation Gratitude.
Operation Gratitude uses your Halloween candy in care packages they send out to U.S. troops overseas. These care packages put smiles on the faces of the brave men and women who serve our country. You can use your family’s excess Halloween goodies to show them how much you appreciate their service!
The women and men that receive Operation Gratitude’s care packages not only indulge in these sweet treats themselves, but they also use them to befriend locals and make a difference in communities around the world.
I love this program because children and teens can still have a fun experience, pick out a few treats to keep, and give the rest to charity. The kids get a little bit of money, and the parents can feel good about saving their kids’ smiles and supporting a great cause.
This is also a great solution if you bought a little too much candy for the kids in your neighborhood and are stuck with an extra bowl or two! In past years, we’ve bought back hundreds of pounds of candy at these events. I can’t exactly calculate how many cavities that might’ve prevented, but I’m sure it’s a lot!
In addition to the cash, each child that comes by will receive a goody bag full of fun (not-so-sugary) surprises! Thank you so much for all your participation and support. We can’t wait to see you there. Happy Halloween!!
