Things to Smile About!

A commercial artist from Massachusetts, Harvey Ball, designed his iconic bright yellow smiley face in 1963. Over the years, this cheery little guy has become a universal symbol of peace, love, and happiness around the world.

Harvey designed the smiley face as a representation of goodwill and good cheer, and in honor of that original message, he came up with the idea for World Smile Day®. Since the annual event was first observed in 1999, people all over the world have been celebrating World Smile Day® on the first Friday of October. This is a holiday dedicated to spreading joy and performing acts of kindness.

Here at Shamblott Family Dentistry, we want to celebrate World Smile Day® by giving you a few things to smile about! Check out these fun facts that will get you grinning while helping you and your smile stay healthy.

Say Cheese! No wonder this phrase is meant to get you smiling for the camera. Cheese is one of the best-loved foods in America, and that’s great news for your smile! No matter how you slice it, cheese is one of the best foods for your teeth and bones because its high in calcium.

Hard cheeses, like cheddar, have about 240 milligrams of calcium per 30-gram serving (about one sandwich slice). That’s 20 percent of the recommended daily value. Cheese is a delicious and nutritious “superfood” our teeth have been waiting for!

Happier, Healthier! Did you know that simply smiling more often can make you healthier? An article in Psychology Today states, “Each time you smile, you throw a little feel-good party in your brain. The act of smiling activates neural messaging that benefits your health and happiness.”

The article goes on to explain that smiling reduces stress, relaxes the body, and even acts as a natural pain reliever. When we’re stressed, we tend to clench and grind our teeth more, which can wear down the enamel and potentially cause damage. By smiling more often you look better, feel better, and keep your teeth healthier!

Happy and Free! Seeing a new dentist can be a bit intimidating. But at Shamblott Family Dentistry, we want to break the norm to make our patients smile! As a new patient, your new patient exam is FREE!

For your first visit, we will offer an initial exam, consultation, and x-rays at no cost to you. We believe that you shouldn’t have to pay to find out if there could be a problem with your teeth. We want you to leave our office calm, comfortable, and confident that you made a great decision by coming to see us.

The Ripple Effect. The best thing about smiling is… well, everything! A smile causes a chain reaction of positivity. Smiling elevates your mood, your health, and your looks. When you smile at others, the effects are contagious. By letting your joy shine, you’re increasing your personal happiness and the happiness of others around you.

Don’t be surprised if smiling more results in stronger connections, better days, and increased levels of joy. Happy World Smile Day® from everybody at Shamblott Family Dentistry!
