Do you dread going to the dentist? Do you avoid making an appointment or put it off just a little longer? Maybe you’ve been avoiding the dentist for a long time. You’re not alone. There are many reasons people put off going to the dentist. Some patients have had bad experiences with dentists in the past. Others have a fear or phobia of going to the dentist, and the cycle of neglect only makes the thought of going even scarier. Going to the dentist shouldn’t be scary, uncomfortable, or stressful. Here are a few myths about going to the dentist that I’d like to dispel right now.
It’s Always Painful. Trips to the dentist and dental procedures are associated with pain, and dramatic depictions of drills and needles don’t do much to help that. Dentists and hygienists are specially trained to have a gentle hand when conducting cleanings, examinations, and procedures. A good dentist will do everything in their power to make sure that you feel a minimal amount of discomfort. Most dental procedures are done with the help of local anesthesia, which involves numbing your lip and cheek with a shot of Novocain or other local anesthetics. This ensures that your procedure is free from pain or discomfort. While local anesthesia may help with pain, it doesn’t necessarily help with the stress and fear of going to the dentist. If a dental phobia is something you struggle with, you may want to consider sedation dentistry. My practice offers sedation dentistry, also known as sleep dentistry, to patients that have dental anxiety or phobia.
You’ll Be Shamed or Scolded. It’s a common belief that all dentists are judgmental of those who don’t keep up with their oral health. Nothing could be farther from the truth, especially at Shamblott Family Dentistry. My staff and I provide a safe environment, completely free of shaming or lectures. Dentists are professionals who simply want to help patients achieve optimal oral health. A good dentist will meet you exactly where you are at, no matter the state of your oral health. Everyone deserves to get superior dental care without worrying about being ashamed of or embarrassed about their teeth.
Too Much Work to be Done. If you haven’t gone to the dentist for a while or feel like you’ve been having a lot of problems lately, you might be apprehensive about the amount of dental work you need done. Even if your mouth needs a lot of attention, all the procedures don’t have to be done all at once. Your dentist can work with you to come up with a treatment plan to slowly address any issues you might be experiencing. This is another situation in which sedation dentistry can benefit a patient. If you’d rather “get it over with,” then sedation dentistry can help accomplish that. Since the patient is asleep during the appointment, more procedures can be done at once. This can help save time in the long-term.
All Dentists are the Same. It’s important to find a dentist that you click with. Not all dentists work the same way or have the same style, so do your research to figure out what kind of dentist will suit your needs. Be sure to call ahead to the office with any questions or concerns you may have before your first appointment. You can usually get a good idea of the attitude and environment of the practice by talking to the receptionist.
